SBC9-The History and Invention of Volleyball

Nowadays, volleyball has spread to be 122 years old.Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team’s court under organized rules. It has been a part of the official program of the Summer Olympic Games since 1964.

Volleyball was invented in 1895 by creative, William G. Morgan after the idea of basketball just four years before. William was born on January 23, 1870 in Lockport, NY. He was a twenty five year old gym teacher when he invented this sport in Massachusetts. Volleyball used to be called “mintonette” and is a blend of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball all mixed together to create this unique, fun sport. Today, this sport has spread to 211 countries around the whole world!

The first official game was played at Springfield College in 1896 and was then popular enough to have a new customized ball in 1900. Today there is more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball and over 80 million people worldwide who play at least once a week, which is crazy!

Have you ever played on a volleyball team? Was it inside or outside school? Did you enjoy playing?
